Okay, okay...the song
Before playing the video posted below, let me explain. (I'll use my cousin Snickety's method for names) The Mr. and I run a pretty tight ship with our boys. When the music came home a month or so ago for the upcoming Christmas program at Son #1's school, we were concerned with one of the songs. Here is the letter I sent to Mrs. MusicTeacher:
Dear Mrs. MusicTeacher,
I did not know who I should contact about this, so I called Mrs. Principal earlier. She suggested that I e-mail you. I am also copying Miss FirstGradeTeacher since.
As parents, we feel it is our duty to try and raise our children with the highest morals and values. We strive everyday to lead our children in a direction that we hope they will continue to follow throughout their lives.
With that said, we are concerned about one of the songs that has been chosen for the Christmas Program. The song we are referring to is "Santa Claus, Santa Claus You Are Much Too Fat." We know it is intended to be "cute" or "funny" but, in a society where self image is such a delicate issue, we do not feel it is appropriate. We teach our children that teasing or making fun of someone, for any reason, is not acceptable. We want Son#1 to participate in the Christmas program. However, his dad & I discussed it and we do not want him singing this song. We do not want him practicing it or performing it in the program. We have already discussed with Son#1 that we do not want him to sing it (and the reason why) and I'm sure he will mention it to you as well. We know this may come as a problem during music class when all of the others are practicing this song, so please let us know what we need to do on our end to make the situation easier.
Thank you for your understanding. A & F S.
Now, here is the video of the kids singing it at the program tonight. It is a little hard to understand, so I will type the chorus underneath (since that was our main concern).
Chorus
Santa Claus, Santa Claus, you're too fat!
I was sleeping peacefully and now my bed is flat.
Santa Claus, Santa Claus, how much do you weigh?
I'm glad I'm not a reindeer that has to pull your sleigh!
This is repeated a few times throughout the song and at the end they yell, "Santa, you're too fat!"
Our main concern with this song is that it was being sung by first graders. These kids think that Santa Claus is a REAL person...not some fictional character. And with that understanding...back to what I mentioned in the letter. What do you think? Leave me your comments.
NOW, on to the pictures I promised! I can only put some on here from our church program because I was too far away for tonight's school program. Luckily, both boys were in the church one. ENJOY!

Wow. That must have been tough. I think you made the right decision and that the music teacher is out of line. Making JD leave the stage? How did he feel about that?
Your family picture is adorable! I can't believe those boys - they're so big!
I feel that you made the right decision. That song is incredibly inappropriate!!! I wouldn't let my kids sing it either. What kind of message are they sending by letting the kids sing those words, while parents chuckle and clap in the audience? ALSO, I am a little bit shocked that you were the ONLY parent that had a problem with it!
Anyway... I hope I don't offend anyone. I guess I feel as strongly about it as you Andrea!
Richard and I both agree with you too. I think this song is completely inappropriate and am proud of you for your response.

i do agree .you made the right desision.
You definitely made the right call. I'm shocked that so many parents were ok with the song.
Aside from the body image issues you mention in your letter, it is also NOT OK to encourage kids to bully and harass fat people - particularly kids. And yes, that is what it is doing. It doesn't take much of a stretch of the imagination to visualize a group of kids harassing a fat kid with kid's name, kid's name, you are much to fat.
